"Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed political power to unify the nation": Mani Sankar Aiyar. While discussing his book titled `The Rajiv I Knew`, Mani Sankar Aiyar shed light on political sacrifices made by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the pursuit of national unity. "If you try to impose uniformity, it will not lead to unity, but if you allow diversity, people will agree to belong," noted Aiyar. He emphasized Rajiv Gandhi`s belief that unity arises organically when people are allowed to express their unique identities. Recounting his time as a joint secretary in the Prime Minister`s office, Aiyar revealed a remarkable alignment between Rajiv Gandhi`s vision for India and his aspirations. He asserts that Rajiv`s vision for India aligns with his own. The discussion touched upon two controversial events during Rajiv Gandhi`s tenure: the Shah Bano case and the opening of the locks at Ayodhya by Arun Nehru. The session examined Rajiv Gandhi`s handling of the Shah Bano case, in which he used the Muslim Women Protection Act of 1986 to overrule the Supreme Court`s ruling. Aiyar clarified that Rajiv wasn`t anti-feminist or religious and urged the media to dispel misconceptions surrounding him.
