A flexible approach to language while penning a song can bring out beautiful outcomes, says Vaishak Somanath. Vaisakh Somanath, a songwriter and singer, emphasized the beauty that arises from the flexibility in language usage in songwriting during the Kerala Literature Festival. Focusing on rhythm and politics, he highlighted common elements between Tamil and Malayalam languages discovered through his songwriting journey. Vaisakh demonstrated how some Malayalam words may seem less suitable for singing compared to Tamil. Through examples and phonetic analysis, he illustrated the impact of slight flexibility in word usage in both languages. Additionally, Vaisakh revealed that certain words, often considered exclusively Tamil, originally belonged to Malayalam. He expressed his observation that the distinction between Tamil and Malayalam is fading as he explores further. In the second part of the session, Vaishak introduced various rhythm formats, showcasing their flexibility through practical examples. He sang the same song in different rhythms, explaining the time meter and its creative possibilities. He sang a song that the audience had requested as the session came to an end.
